UniData provides two kind of data access:
- open data
(all users can use the data - an expense allowance could be required)
- restricted data
(the data use is limited - see below)
longitudinal (trend repeated cross-section)
In 2020 the European Parliament commissioned a public opinion survey on the topic of the COVID-19 pandemic. Three rounds of data have been collected in 21 (Round 1) and 27 (Round 2, Round 3) EU member states, with more than 22,000 cases per round. The issues covered focus on an assessment of public measures against the pandemic and on the impact the pandemic has on various aspects of the personal lives of the respondents.
The arguments of the study are as follows:
- satisfaction with the measures of the national government to fight the Coronavirus pandemic;
- attitudes towards the consequences of the restriction measures in the own country;
- satisfaction with solidarity between EU member states in fighting the Coronavirus pandemic;
- awareness of and satisfaction with measures taken by the EU to respond to the Coronavirus pandemic;
- current emotional status;
- concern about the effect of the Coronavirus on: personal health, health of family and friends;
- impact of the Coronavirus pandemic based on personally experienced in the own country;
- impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on personal situation;
- use of selected online social networks in the last week;
- most trustworthy persons or institutions with regard to information about the Coronavirus pandemic;
- impact of the pandemic on EU image.

Since new questions have been introduced in Round 2 (q9new, q10new_1 to q10new_4, q19new, q20new_1 to q20new_5), several question numbers in the basic questionnaire differ from variables names in the dataset:

- question number 10 = variables q10new_1 to q10new_4
- question number 11 = variable q9
- question number 12 = variable q10
- question number 13 = variables q11_1 to q11_3
- question number 14 = variables q13_01 to q13_10
- question number 17 = variable q19new

The excel file ‘EP Covid_variable_correspondence.xlsx’ gives a detailed overview of the corresponding variables across the three rounds.
For EE, LU, LT, and LV the actual age is only provided in age groups (AGE_R).
Please note that a small number of respondents indicate an age category when stopped full-time education (TAE variable – “SD3 TERMINAL AGE OF END OF EDUCATION”) which is higher than the actual age of the respondent in actualage (ACTUALAGE variable – “SD2 AGE EXACT”). Similarly, some respondents state that they are “Still studying” (TAE variable) but at the same time are coded with other categories in WORK_STAT variable (“SD6 EMPLOYMENT STATUS – RESPONDENT”).
Data for the answer category “Somebody else in the household takes care of all/most of the grocery shopping” in question SD4 (“HOUSEHOLD HEAD” in MGS1_1 to MGS1_4 variables) have not been made available in the original data delivery. Variables MGS1_3 and MGS1_4 represent recoded versions of MGS1_1 and MGS1_2.
Some answer categories in the dataset differ from the information in the basic questionnaire. For example, variable CHILD_HH only consists of answer categories “yes/no”, whereas respondents are asked about the number of children living in their household in the questionnaire.
Please note that fieldwork coordination reasons resulted in slight differences in the date of interview between the dataset (“YYYYMMDD” variable) and the official technical specifications. For CY, EE, LU, LT, LV, and MT no data were provided.
Please note that the region information was removed by the archive for several cases because of potential de-anonymization issues.
For Denmark a detailed region variable is excluded because of potential de-anonymization issues. Variable REGION_GRP_DK_2 (“REGION GROUPING – DENMARK (NUTS 3 – CONSTRUCTED BY THE ARCHIVE)”) has been constructed by the archive in accordance with the categories published by Statistics Denmark.
The occurrence of identical detailed and grouped region variables for Greece and Portugal is intentional.
Please note that the Polish region variables REGION_PL (“DETAILED REGION – POLAND (NUTS 2)”) and REGION_GRP_PL (“REGION GROUPING – POLAND (NUTS 1 MODIFIED)”) correspond to the NUTS 2013 classification.
Checks for duplicate case identification numbers and cases have been performed. The dataset has been checked for duplicate cases on the base of 64 selected non-technical (substantial) variables without evidence for any duplicate.
